Which type of link exchange is better?

Usually while exchanging links, i ask for contextual link. But there are site wide links, footer links, text links, banners, etc.
I request for link on the relevant page or section of the website than site wide links.
Which one is the best ?

Well, link exchange is good way but as well more risky instead of link building is good and ethical way.Some time in link exchange our site down the page ranks.

I think its better to get a link form Footer if footer is common for whole website, as you get backlink from all the pages of that website, which have their own advantage..

Link exchange is the important and useful for site. always exchange link with the site which high pr compare to your site. and category should be matched. that's it this two points you have to consider while exchanging a link.
